The Minamata disaster is a disease that affects your nervous system by methylmercury poisoning. This occurred by consuming big amounts of fish and shellfish contaminated by waste in the water which later was found it came from a chemical plant. This event happened in May, 1956 in Minamata City. The things from the water showed high levels of Hg contaminants. The symptoms were effects in your vision, tremors, some cases showed lesions on patients, ataxia, and dysarthria. 1043 people died.

The river was nearly always covered in oils slicks, and they say it “bubbled like a deadly stew.” They also say rats would float by and their corpses would be so bloated that they were the size of a dog. The chain reaction went out of control at 1:23 AM on April 26th. Multiple explosions occurred and triggered a large fireball and blew off heavy steel and concrete lid off the reactor. This accident released huge amounts of radioactive material into the air and was carried very far by air currents. A meltdown of the core occurred.

The company that was at fault for this horrific disaster tried to isolate itself from any legal responsibilities. They ended up reaching a settlement and accepted the responsibility; they paid $470 million which was a small amount considering all of the damage this caused.

This protocol is an agreement across the globe to provide protection to the stratospheric ozone layer by phasing out the production and consumption of ozone. ODS are substances that were often used in products like refrigeration, fire extinguishers, air conditioners, and aerosols. This protocol seems to be successful and is the first to achieve ratification by all countries in the world. The ozone layer is on a path to repair.

The Love Canal is in Niagara Falls, New York. A company used the canal to dispose of 21,000 tons of dangerous chemicals. They began to leak and then contaminated soil and groundwater. People began to complain about smells and the water level rose. There was a emergency declaration. Another one was established in 1980, people were evacuated, and homes were destroyed. This awful disaster led to legislation to manage disposal of dangerous waste in the country.

It was adopted as the first addition to the UNFCCC which is a treaty that is committed to developing national programs to reduce their contributions of greenhouse gases. Greenhouse gases affect the energy balance of the atmosphere in ways expected to lead to an increase in global average temperatures.

Hurricane Helene was a devastating tropical cyclone known for its swift intensification that produced an extensive amount of damage and loss of lives. The storm made landfall on September 26th, 2024, to Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. The storms intense winds and flooding killed more than 250 people which made it the deadliest hurricane to hit the US. It was a category 4 hurricane in just the span of 2 days.
