    The IUCN is an international organization that focuses on the conservation of nature and its resources. Founded in 1948, the IUCN is important to the modern day environmental movement since the organization provides research, inquiry, and encouragement in order to protect the environment at the global stage.

    Gaia Hypothesis

    The Gaia Hypothesis was proposed by James Lovelock and Lynn Margulis in the 1970s. It said how biology and the evolution of organisms affect the stability of global temperature. This resulted in many environmentalists realizing this effect, and ended up influencing the modern environmental movement as it created the emphasis on evolution in biology in terms of climate change.
  • Earth Day

    Provided by UNESCO, the first annual Earth Day was established on April 22, 1970. Earth Day occurs once every year, in which helps people realize the importance of protecting our earth environmentally. This day is important since it provided the birth of the modern environmental movement in the United States, which helped kickstart many environmentalists to talk about our environment.
  • Chernobyl

    On April 26, 1986, a reactor at the Chernobyl nuclear powerplant exploded. This resulted in many deaths, an extreme exposure of radiation around the area, and contaminated large amounts of land and water, killing wildlife in the process. This affected Europe's environment for many years on. The Chernobyl disaster is important to the modern environmental movement since it caused people to worry about the effects of nuclear energy and their impact on the environment.

    The Montreal Protocol is an international treaty that is used to protect the Earth's ozone layer by using less harmful production. Effective in 1989 and signed by 46 countries, it was a key event in the global environmental movement since it provided a promise made by 46 countries around the world to reduce ozone pollution and take more caution to their environment.
  • Exxon Valdez Oil Spill

    The Exxon Valdez oil spill was an environmental disaster that led to millions of gallons of oil being spilled near Alaskan waters in 1989, resulting in the water being polluted with oil, and millions of dollars of dammages. This event plays a big part in the modern environmental movement since it provides the dangers of carrying oil across seas and the disastrous consequences of oil spills in oceans.
  • Agenda 21

    Agenda 21 was an environmental plan of action for sustainable growth that was showed as a result of the Earth Summit, that wanted global and local governments to adopt their own Agenda 21's in order to provide global sustainable growth. This is a key event in the global environmental movement since it introduced the concept of sustainable development as well as promote international cooperation's on environmental dilemmas, creating awareness.
  • Greta Thunberg

    Greta was born on January 3rd, 2003. She is a popular Swedish activist that fights against climate change, starting from a very young age at 15 years old. She heavily contributed to the global environmental movement by being a key figure for fighting climate change, and encouraging many more activists to speak out for the environment.
  • Paris Agreement

    The Paris Agreement is a document signed by 196 countries to help combat increasing temperature levels. Signed in 2016, this agreement contributes to the modern environmental unit since the agreement includes the majority of nations and an environmental goal to combat climate change.
