History of the atom

By nbohm
  • John Dalton

He thought that a object was only made up of one type of atom. Gold would be made up of gold atoms. Silver would only be made up of silver atoms. He also thought that when you combined two atoms it would create another substance all together
  • JJ Thomson

He discovered the Electron. He did this by using a magnet and putting it close to 2 beams of electricity. He found that the atom has positive matter with negativly charged electrons.
  • James Maxwell

He was the first person to discover the electromegnetic field. He was a scotish scientist. He thought that a electrmagnetic field was what kept the electrons orbiting the nucleus because the magnetic field kept the outer electrons close.
  • Ernest Rutherford

He discovered that atoms are made up of smaller parts. He did a experiment where he put a beam through a thin sheet of gold. Some of the beam bounced off but most went through. He discovered that the atom is mostly empty space except for the electrons and the nucleus.
  • Marie Curie

She and another scientest discovered radioactivity. She found that two elements made up radioactivity. Radium and uranium. They were awarded a 1911 prize for their work. She opened up the possibiltiy of tons of other elements then what they currently had.
  • Niels Bohr

He thought that the electrons actually orbit the center of the atom. After his experiment he discovered that his theory was true. The electrons orbit the nucleus similar to what the planets orbit the sun.
