Hilary Putnam began his higher education at the University of Pennsylvania and continued at Harvard. After earning his graduate degree, he went on to obtain his PhD at UCLA in 1951. This launched a lifelong search for truth and understanding in the realm of mathematics and philosophy. -

A Shift in Ideas
Beginning in the 1970's, Putnam began listening to critics of his "Strong Realism" argument and they had an impact on him. A collection of essays describing this shift in thinking was published in 1985 titled "Realism and Reason." His refined theory was called "Internal Realism" and allowed for differences in observations based on the observers viewpoint. (Putnam, Realism and Reason)
