Herbert was part of the republican party. His vice president was Charles Curtis and Herbert represented Iowa. Before going into presidency Herbert was Secretary of Commerce under the president Warren Harding. Hoover beat Alfred E. Smith in the election with 444 votes and Smith with only 87. Hoover also won over 40 states within the 48 states at the time. Soon nicknamed Bert, The Grand Old Man, The Man of Great Heart, and The Cheif. Herberts son had alligators and they sometimes crawled about.
