In the early 20th century, Istanbul faced a stray dog problem. In 1910, under modernization pressures, thousands of dogs were exiled to Hayırsız Island, a barren land in the Marmara Sea. Deprived of food and water, they were left to die. Witnesses recalled their cries from Istanbul’s shores. The "Hayırsız Island Massacre" haunts Turkey’s animal rights history.
