French and Indian War
Description - France and England had been fighting for dominance. Colonist Reaction - Britain began stopping smuggling and upping taxes which caused outrage. -
Sugar Act
Description - Changed tax on imports from the Caribbean from 0.6 cents per gallon to 3 cents per gallon. Colonist Reaction - They could begin trying smugglers which caused colonial smugglers to lose power. -
Stamp Act
Description - In an attempt for Britain to make money, they ruled all printed material had to carry a stamp. Colonist Reaction - The colonies all united and boycotted goods together. -
Declaratory Act
Description - Said they could tax people, but they aren’t at that moment. Colonist Reaction - This followed the Stamp Act and people saw it as a victory. -
Townshend Act
Description - Created a new board of customs that stopped smuggling. Colonist Reaction - People didn’t like not being able to smuggle goods and began boycotting again. -
Tea Act
Description - Only tea was taxed. Colonist Reaction - People were angry on principle, even if it overall made tea cheaper. -
Revolutionary War
Description - FIghting broke out between Massachusetts militiamen and British soldiers. Colonist Reaction - Not all of the colonists were pro-independence.
