Anton van Leeuwenhoek discovered bacteria
In 1674, Anton van Leeuwenhoek discovered bacteria building up on his teeth. Leeuwenhoek examined the bacteria using a single-lensed microscope that he created. While Leeuwenhoek was examining bacteria, he thought they looked like animals. So he called them animalcules.
