    US Invasion of Panama

    The US invasion of Panama occurred during the administration of George H.W Bush. The US sent marines to dispose of the general and dictator of Panama Manuel Noriega who was heavily connected to the drug trade. The US needed to remove Noriega because they needed a stable government to complete the transfer of the Panama canal to the Panamanian government. The invasion involved 25,000 American troops but had few casualties; it provided a new post-war military strategy.

    Magic Johnson’s HIV Announcement

    Magic Johsnon announced before the 1991-1992 NBA season that he was positive for HIV after a physical; this forced him to retire. At first, Johnson stated he did not know how he got the disease, but he later revrealed that he sex with many women. He revealed this to let the public know that hetersexuals too could contract HIV. Magic raised awareness for HIV and exposed the public to the notion that gays were not the only ones who could get HIV. He became a figurehead of the fight against HIV.

    Rodney King Beating / L.A. Riots

    There were riots in L.A after a jury acquitted four officers of the LAPD for using excessive force in the arrest and beating of Rodney King. The beating was videotaped and widely viewed by the public. After the verdict, thousands of people rioted in the L.A metropolitan area and there was looting, arson, and assault. Eventually, the national guard, and US military had to come to assist in ending the unrest. The beatings showed the immense racism in the police department and the need for reform.

    Hurricane Andrew was a category 5 hurricane that struck the Bahamas, Florida, and Louisiana. It was the most destructive hurricane to ever hit Florida. It hit Miami Dade county the hardest and cost 27 billion dollars in damages and killed 65 people. Because it completely decimated some areas of Miami, Florida changed its building codes to withstand intense hurricanes to prevent another disaster like this.

    Passage of the North American Free Trade Agreement

    This was a trade agreement signed between Mexico, Canada, and the U.S. It was signed into law by Bill Clinton. It resulted in the elimination/reduction of trade barriers or investment between the 3 countries. It also reduced tariffs between Mexico and the U.S on exported goods. Most economists say it was beneficial to the economies and average citizens but hurt a small minority of workers subject to increased trade competition.

    Harding / Kerrigan Scandal

    Nancy Kerrigan was attacked after a practice in Detroit which was planned by Tonya Harding’s ex husband, Gillooly. Gillooly ordered the hit because he knew Harding wanted to make the olympic team at all costs and Kerrigan was her biggest competitor, so he tried to eliminate her. Harding made the Winter Olympics but out of sympathy, Kerrigan was given a spot as well. Eventually, Gillooly implicated Harding and after the Olympics, Harding admitted involvement and was banned from USFSA.

    Unabomber Attacks and Arrest

    Theodore John Kaczynski was called the unabomber; he was a terrorist who sent 16 mail bombs over 18 years that killed 3 and injured 23. He targeted universities, airlines, and people who harmed the environment. He was eventually caught because his brother recognized that the ideas published in the Unabomber’s manifesto were similar to Kaczyskis. The manhunt for Kaczynski was the longest and most expensive manhunt in FBI history.
  • Olympic Park Bombing

    Olympic Park Bombing

    This was a domestic terrorist pipe bombing attack in Atlanta, Georgiai in Centennial Olympic Park during the 1996 Summer Olympics. The bombings were perpetrated by Eric Rudolph and they killed two people and injured 112 others. His goal was to cancel the summer olympics. Many were saved by security guard Richard Jewell who found the bombs before they detonated.

    NATO bombing in Yugoslavia

    This was NATO’s military operation against Yugoslavia during the Kosovo war. The Kosovo war was fought between Yugoslavia and Kosovo and it was due to Kosovo defecting from Yugoslavia. NATO supported Kosovo because Yugoslavia had been implementing ethnic cleansing against Albanians. NATO implemented air strikes on Yugoslavia until they withdrew their forces from Kosovo. Eventually, a UN peacekeeper negotiated the peace between the two countries and Kosovo gained independence.
  • Columbine High School Massacre

    Columbine High School Massacre

    This was a school shooting carried out by two seniors, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold in Columbine, Colorado. 12 people were killed by the shooters and 21 were injured. The shooters both committed suicide. This was the first large school shooting and it inspired a craze of school shootings. The police were heavily criticized for their slow response, and due to this, the police created the Immediate Action Rapid Deployment tactic which is used to stop active school shooter situations.
