Joseph Nicéphore Niépce created the first permanent photograph in 1825, by using chemicals to burn the photographs into the paper, which he called heliography. However, Joseph would die in 1833, so Louis would have to finish it himself, using silver iodide, and exposing it to mercury vapor for better contrast, and fixing the image with a common salt solution.
