After burning Beatty, Montag makes a run for it to Faber's house. From there, he leaves toward the river to avoid the mechanical hounds and makes his way toward the railroad where he meets other intellectual rebels fighting for books like him.

While Montag and his new group of scholars are walking, they see flashing lights of jets flying toward the city and with that, the bombs go off flattening the city. The men turn around and head toward the destruction to help survivors and beginning rebuilding a better new society.

While walking home from his job as a fireman, Montag meets his new neighbor Clarisse. Clarisse is very unusual which sparks interest in Montag.

After his long conversation with Clarisse, Montag continues to walk home and when he arrives, he finds his wife passed out in bed with a bottle of empty pills next to her. Montag calls the doctors who pump her stomach with a machine referred to as "The Snake".

After getting called to burn a house for hidden books, Montag is in the attic and a book falls into his hand. Without even thinking, he hides the book and takes it home with him after work.

After his long and stressful day, Montag goes home and starts talking to Mildred. He tells her he hasn't seen Clarisse in a while and Mildred informs him that the family moved away and she thinks Clarisse was hit and killed by a car.

Montag's boss, Captain Beatty, stops by his house to check up on him and later informs him that if a fireman takes a book from a burning, they have 48 hours to return it. After Beatty leaves, Montag takes out the books he's been hiding to show Mildred and asks her to help him read through them.

After failing to connect with Mildred through the books, Montag remembers a professor that he met who has studied books. He goes to Faber asking him to teach him reading comprehension. They then start working together to figure out how to stop the book burning.

While Mildred's friends, Mrs. Phelps and Mrs. Bowles, are over watching TV, Montag decides to show them one of his books and reads a poem to them to connect with them. This led to one of Mildred's friends crying and the other yelling at Montag. He then drops the book into the incinerator at Faber's prompting.

While at the station giving his book to Beatty, the alarm goes off and when they arrive at the scene, Montag sees his own house. Mildred called the alarm on him and Beatty makes him burn it all himself. Then, Beatty arrests Montag but out of rage, he takes his flamethrower and burns Beatty to a crisp.
