Capture of Edessa
Imad al Zengi, Muslim ruler of Aleppo and Mosul, Captures Edessa. The settlers appealed to the west for help which started the fervour that led to the second crusade. -

Quantum Praedecessores
Pope Eugenius III in response to plea from Frankish Settlers in the near East issues the Papal Bull of 'Quantum Praedecessores'( How much our Predecessors, referring to the perceived glory and success of the first crusade). One key difference to the 1st Crusade was only officially chosen delegates could preach this crusade. The document referred to the 1st crusade regularly 'Fathers and Sons'. Crusaders offered sin remission. The church offered legal protection to crusading Families properties. -

Failure to recapture edessa
Joseclyn attempts to reclaim Edessa and fails, however Joseclyn escapes. Eager to establish his authority Nur al Din chooses to not follow his fathers example and spare the inhabitants. Instead he slaughters all citizens including the women and children. To further prove his point he completely flattens the city. -

Bernard of Clairvaux preached at Vezelay on Easter Sunday accompanied by Louis VII king of France. Many western Knights took the cr0ss due to his preaching. -

Zengis Death
After his death the Muslim world was thrown into dissaray (especially syria) lawlessness broke out across the land 'Towns in confusion, roads unsafe' - Damascan Inhabitant. Zengi's Lands were split between his sons. Nur al Din (youngest) inherited Aleppo and chose to be focused on LLevantine affairs however had no access to the wealth and resources of the Fertile Crescent. -
