    -In August Germans approached the edge of Stalingrad
    -They started to bomb raids over the city, and burn down almost every wooden structure
    -Soviet officers considered burning down factories, so the Germans wouldn't
    -By the end of Sept. they had control of 9/10's of the city
    -When winter set in, the Soviets took control, and surrounded Germany
    -Germany surrendered on Jan. 31 1942
    -Marked turning point of war and Soviets moved towards Germany

    -Stalin wanted Britain and America to open a second front in Africa
    -107,000 allied troops landed in North Africa
    -General Erwin also known as "Desert Fox" led his men in a chase for the Afrika Korps
    -Fought for months, and in May 1943 the Afrikan Korps surrendered
    -The allied forces now had control of the North African Shores

    -Allies made plans to free France and western Europe from the Nazis
    -D-Day was the first day of the invasion
    -Three divisions parachuted behind German lines
    -Normandy, France was the initial location of the attack
    -Omaha Beach was the bloodiest battle during operation Overlord

    Battle of the Bulge
    -Hitler ordered troops to recapture the Belgian part of Antwerp
    -He hoped to disrupt enemy supply lines and demoralize the allies
    -He also hoped to that a victory would break up America and Britain's supply lines
    -120 Americans were captured
    -Nazis ended up losing 600 tanks, 120,000 troops, and 1,600 planes
    -Ended up having to surrender
    -The retreat helped gain moral in winning the war for the Allies

    -American troops were the one to liberate the concentration camp
