  • Birth

  • Studied at University of Vienna

    1855 -1861
After he earned his degree in Physics, he taught for a few years before taking up a position at the University of Graz. He was an avid explorer of physics and mechanics of gravity. It was during this time, "he discovered the physiological phenomenon that has come to be called Mach’s bands, the tendency of the human eye to see bright or dark bands near the boundaries between areas of sharply differing illumination." link text
  • 1860 - Finished doctorate

Completed his doctorate on electrical discharge. Mach researched how the doppler effect actually worked in conjunction with the human ear. "Now well known for his research on sound and the eponymous number representing the ratio of the speed of an object moving through a fluid and the local speed of sound." Basically how sound made sound underwater or the liquid in the human ear. link text
  • 1883 - Die Mechanik in ihrer Entwickelung (The Science of Mechanics)

With Mach's book published in 1883, it gave a new look to Newton's theories and the mechanics of gravity. https://physicstoday.scitation.org/doi/full/10.1063/PT.3.2214
  • Mach's Principles

Mach's principles were ground breaking and paved way to Einstein's Theory of relativity. link text
