With a strong foundation of personal identity going into early adulthood, people can achieve intimacy and love in close relationships. But with a poor sense of self, people may struggle with isolation and loneliness.

Now in old age, the man spends the Thanksgiving holiday with his family. He looks back on his life and feels fulfilled and at peace with his accomplishments. During this stage, people look back on life and decide whether they are fulfilled or regretful. If they feel content after taking stock, they may feel wise, and at peace with the end of their life. If they feel regretful, they may feel bitter and fear that their life will end without accomplishing what they wanted to.
