Rescued by Athena after being abandoned by his birth mother due to the wrath of Hera, Hercules was given to Hera. She takes care of Hercules out of pity as she does not recognize him. In Erikson's first stage of development, the initial question of whether the world is safe and can be trusted is put into question. If an infant is loved, feelings that the world can be safe and others can be trusted can develop. If fear persists, the child learns to mistrust and doubt others.

Hercules was taught a number of subjects by his father and varies tutors. Some of those subjects include wrestling, archery, writing and music. Hercules, as to expected, exceeded in all subjects. Erikson's fourth stage of industry versus inferiority, has children learn skills and information related to their culture. If a child is taught well and given recognition, the child will become industrious and grow to become confident. However, if a child is not successful they may feel inferior.

Hercules marries the daughter of King Creon of Thebes, Megara, for his success in battle. They loved each other and had a number of children. Erikson's sixth stage, which takes place in early adulthood, has people questioning whether or not they can form intimate relationships with their current identities. If a person is willing to make themselves vulnerable they have a happy intimate relationship. However, if a person is not able to form such a relationship, they may feel isolated and lonely.
