    Born in Rotterdam Burgundian Netherlands Holy Roman Empire his father was a Catholic priest and thus could not marry so we was born out of wetlock

    Erasmus may have learned to read and write in the small town of woerden

  • 1476

    At the age of 6 or 9 he and his family moved to Gouda and he started at the school of Pieter Winckel

  • Period: 1476 to 1483

    Erasmus when he was 9 or 12 was sent to a school of Latin in Deventer Netherlands

    He was joined by his brother and this school was one of the best in the Netherlands his stay ended when plague hit the town

    His Mother and Father died of bubonic plague

    He may have moved back to Rotterdam

  • 1484

    When he was 14 or 17 he and his brother went to a cheaper grammar

    the Grammer school was at 's-Hertogenbosch

    when he was 18 or 21 he fell madly in love with Servatius Rogerus

    He made a long list of love letters to this monk and called him half of his soul
  • 1493

    He took up the post of Latin Secretary and be came a priest and after this he went to Paris to study theology

  • 1516

    He published a translation of the New testament into Greek and Latin

    On July 12th 1536 he died of dysentery surrounded by great friends and colleagues
