    UTK establishes women's basketball as its first intercollegiate women's sport. The creation of the Lady Vols program gave female athletes new opportunities to compete at a high level and gain recognition. Making the Lady Vols program an important step toward inclusion and representation in college sports.

    Title IX is enacted, mandating gender equity in federally funded education programs, including athletics. This law became one of the most important turning points for women in college sports. Before Title IX, female athletes had very few opportunities to play at competitive levels, and women’s teams often received little funding or recognition. The NCAA did not yet sponsor women’s sports.She drove the team van, washed uniforms, and even helped plan meals for her players. Despite the challenges, her determination and belief in her athletes helped her build a foundation that would later transform UTK women’s basketball program into one of the most successful in the country.

She still is praised and even has a honorary statue to this day at the UTK campus.

    The University of Tennessee honors Summitt’s legacy by renaming the women’s basketball court at Thompson–Boling Arena to “Pat Summitt Court.” Pat Summitt passed away, but her influence continues through the Pat Summitt Foundation, dedicated to Alzheimer’s disease research. The Lady Vols remain a powerhouse in women’s college basketball, with continued success and commitment.
