The earliest known prosthetic made is an artificial toe. It would have been made from materials like leather and wood. This prosthetic was found on an ancient Egyptian mummy.

The Capua Leg was made by the Romans. The inner core was made of wood and was covered in bronze. The Capua leg was found in the grave of a male skelton in 1884 during an excavation of Historic Capua. The original was destroyed in WWII and a replica is now housed in the Science Museum of London.
