    Biblical Beliefs

    Martin Luther believed that children should be taught to read at a young age so they could read the Bible independently. He believed that knowledge of the liberal arts, such as history and languages, would provide the best context for studying the Bible.

    Martin Luther (1483 - 1546)

    Luther believed in universal education, not just for the upper class. Education should extend to girls, and children should be taught to read. He argued that education would strengthen individuals, families, and communities. Source: Britannica
  • John Amos Cormenius (1592-1670)

    Cornmenius held similar beliefs of Martin Luther and expanded syaing children learn through sensory exploration. He introduced picture books and wrote a book to guide parents on how to prepare their children for school at home.
  • John Locke (1632-1704)

    Locke believed that children are born with an empty mind, and that their knowledge comes from their experiences. Nurture over nature.
  • Friedrich Froebel (1782-1852)

    Froebel founded kindergarten and believed that children learned through play as the highest expression of development. Kindergarten grew to become a familiar institution throughout the world by the end of the 19th century.
  • Maria Montessori (1870-1952)

    Montessori believe children's senses should be educated first, then intellect. She initiated the idea of learning through hands-on learning materials, leading to be founder of the Montessori Method.
  • Industrial Revolution

    Education was made compulsory for all children up to the age of 10. This meant that every child, whether from a rich or poor background, had a chance to access education.
  • Kindergarten

    The first kindergarten opened in 1837 in Blankenburg, Germany, by Friedrich Froebel. The first kindergarten in the United States was opened in 1856 in Watertown, Wisconsin
  • Loris Malaguzzi (1920-1994)

    Malaguzzi was strong believer of observating and documenting children's interests so that educators could base their programming around it. He founded the Reggio Emilia Approach following WWII.
  • Jean Piaget (1896-1980)

    Pigaet had a theory that children's cognitive development was broken down into 4 stages-sensory motor, preoperational, and concrete operation. Piaget believed that social interaction is important for moral development.
  • Lev Vygotsky (1896-1934)

    Vygotsky believed that social interaction supported cognitive, social and language development in children resulting in his sociocultural theory. He is also know for the scaffolding technique.
  • NAEYC (1926)

    The National Association for the Education of Young Children was established dedicating to improving the well-being of all young children and focusing on the quality of education and developmental services offered to children from birth to the age of eight.
  • WWII

    During World War II, the United States government provided funding for childcare programs to support working parents, especially women who were entering the workforce. Source: Gale
  • The Perry Preschool Project (1962 - 1967)

    Originally was a scientific experiement that provided high-quality preschool education to three- and four-year-old African-American children living in poverty, resulting in numerous positive outcomes.
  • Head Start (1965)

    President Lyndon B. Johnson founded the Head Start program in 1965 as part of the War on Poverty. It is now a federally funded program providing comprehensive early childhood education, health, nutrition, and parent involvement services to low-income children and families.
  • WMELS (2003)

    The Wisconsin Model Early Learning Standards are designed to outline developmental expectations for children from birth through the entrance to 1st grade.
  • Universal Pre-K

    Universal pre-K is a policy framework that would provide all preschool-aged children with access to high-quality, government-funded education and care.
  • Preschool Development Grant

    The Preschool Development Grant Birth through Five (PDG B-5) program was established in 2015 by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).
