  • Johann Amos Comenius

    He was a Czech teacher that is known for writing the first picture book for children called Orbis Pictus. The book was an information book for teachers about the study of senses and nature.
  • John Locke

    Published an essay about how children's experiences form their personal identity. He argued that children are born with a clean slate, and that it is their parents, environment, and actions that shape their character.
  • Jean-Jacques Rousseau

    His ideas about education were different for the time period. He believed that education should reflect goodness and interests of the kids
  • Johann Henrich Pestalozzi

    Suggested that the school atmosphere be more fit for children, and that they implement more concrete teaching materials. He also wrote a book that emphasizes the importance of home education.
  • Robert Owen

    He believed that everyone was born with a good heart, and that it was the world that corrupted you. He also started an infant school for ages 3-10 based on guidance rather than punishment.
  • Friedrich Wilhelm Froebel

    During his childhood he lost his mother and had a rough relationship with his father. This influenced him to take an interest in learning how children's minds develop. This led him to opening the first kindergarten in Germany.
  • Kindergarten

    Germany was the first country to have kindergarten. Kindergarten has gone through many social changes throughout the years. At first it was for poor students and then it went to be led by churches. The kindergarten we know today is the first grade that students enter when they go to school to help them become more independent and prepared for the following grades.
  • Rudolf Steiner

    He was an Australian philosopher that gave lectures leading to the establishments of Waldorf Education. He believed that a child's environment must be carefully planned to nurture their mind. He was a heavy believer in the importance of imagination
  • Maria Montessori

    She opens Children's House. Later she developed a program to encourage children growth through senses and life experiences.
  • A.S. Neill

    Founds Summer Hill School which progresses the movement for free education and schools
  • Sputnik

    When the Soviet union was the first to launch a satellite into space, the question was of what our schools could do better in America became a hot topic. Focuses on engineering and math became more apparent in the education system.
  • High Scope

    This study provided evidence of the effect of nurturing a child's development. It tracked children through the age of 27 to find out the long term effects of children who attended preschool vs those who didn't. It was shown that the kids that were placed in preschool performed significantly better than those who were not.
  • Nursery School

    Nursery schools were designed as a place to nurture a child's physical and mental needs. Early nurseries had an approach that focused on social interaction and active listening. Nurseries quickly evolved into different variations (day nurseries, parent cooperatives, laboratory schools) but nowadays they are mostly used as daycares.
  • Head Start

    The largest publicly funded education program. Some of their main roles were connecting with families of all races, honoring family culture, inclusion of children with special needs, and community collaboration. Head Start has managed to reach and serve 37 million children.
  • Social Reform

    Kindergarten education led to the creation of what is now the average American kindergarten. In 1970 there became more of a focus on nurturing the children intellectually, leading to more academic goals in the curriculum.
  • DAP (Developmentally Appropriate Practice)

    The most current way of thinking for the field. the children's skills and abilities are matched to what skills are common for their age range
  • Media and Technology

    The increasing number of technologies that are accessible for children is endangering their health and development. It is pushing them away from childhood too quickly.
  • No Child Left Behind

    This legislation was passed as an attempt to improve public performance. It requires every school to receive state funds to administer standardized testing yearly

    Common Core State Standards are published for English and math for grades K-12
