Denzel Hayes Washington Jr. was born in Mount Vernon, New York, to Lennis Washington (a beauty parlor owner) and Denzel Hayes Washington Sr. (a Pentecostal minister and employee for the NYC water department). Lennis grew up in Harlem, a predominantly black neighborhood. Denzel Sr. came from rural Virginia.

Denzel frequented the Mount Vernon Boys Club (now the Boys and Girls Club) starting at age 6. Denzel is a middle child with an older sister, Lorice, and a younger brother, David.

At age 14, Lennis enrolled Denzel at Oakland Academy, a boarding school in New York state. On the experience, Washington said, "That decision changed my life because I wouldn’t have survived in the direction I was going. The guys I was hanging out with at the time, my running buddies, have now done maybe 40 years combined in the penitentiary. They were nice guys, but the streets got them." He was one of few black students.

Without a clear idea of what he wanted to do, Denzel found himself butting against school. "I left Fordham for a while, midway through my junior year, so I could take some time to figure out what it was I really wanted to do---which is really just a euphemism for saying I was on academic probation."

At his mother's beauty shop in Mount Vernon a woman named Ruth Green shared a prophecy with Denzel. "I was in my Mother's beauty shop, and I was looking in the mirror, and I saw a woman sitting across the room from me. And she said to my mother, 'Bring me a piece of paper.' Said, 'I have a prophecy.' This is the God's honest truth. I got the piece of paper, and I--I keep it with me all the time. And she wrote down, she said, 'This boy is going to speak to millions of people.'"

After working at a summer camp where a colleague recommended he try acting, Denzel decided to enroll in Fordham's theatre program at the Lincoln Center campus. Denzel would eventually graduate with a BA in Drama and Journalism in 1977.
