  • Montgomery Bus Boycott

    The Montgomery Bus Boycott was part of the Civil Rights Movement that started because of Rosa Parks' arrest on December 1st, 1955. This was a 381 day long boycott, by the African American community and organized by leaders like Martin Luther Kind Jr., of the Montgomery bus system. Their reason for this boycott was to end racial segregation on public buses
  • Little Rock 9

    Little Rock 9 started when nine African American teenagers started attending a previous all white- high school. The reason they were allowed to do so was because of the U.S Supreme Court's decision, that segregated schools were no longer allowed, in the Brown v. Board of Education case. Once they got to the school, Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, they started facing a lot of racism from everyone, even the national guard who at first denied them to enter.
  • Greensboro Sit-in

    The Greensboro Sit-In started when four African American college students from North Carolina decided to go sit down at a segregated lunch counter in Greensboro and asked to be served. Even though they politely asked, they were refused service but they stayed put as a way to protest.
  • Birmingham Movement

    The Birmingham Movement was a civil rights protest that was started by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and led by Martin Luther King Jr. The campaign was made to try to bring attention to the racial segregation and violent resistance to desegregation in Birmingham, Alabama. Because of the campaign, public places in Birmingham were eventually desegregated.
  • The Heart of Atlanta Motel v. United States

    The Heart of Atlanta Motel v. United States case was about that motel not allowing black Americans to book a stay. The Supreme Court decided that the federal government could enforce anti-discrimination laws in public places, which helped a lot in the Civil Rights Act.
  • Assassination of Malcolm X

    Malcolm X was an African American leader and civil rights activist and had just made a new organization, the Organization of Afro American Unity for racial justice. He was getting ready to make a speech at the Audubon Ballroom when he was shot multiple times by three different gunmen.
  • March from Selma to Montgomery

    The March from Selma to Montgomery were three different marches to show African American citizens' desire to be able to vote. The first march was named "Bloody Sunday" on March 7th, 1965 when protesters were brutally attacked by law enforcers. The second march was "Turnaround Tuesday" on March 9th, 1965. The last march began March 21st and ended on March 25th 1965, and covered 54 miles.
  • James Meredith’s March Against Fear

    James Meredith’s March Against Fear was started by James Meredith, which was the first black student to integrate the University of Mississippi. He started his march to encourage black voter registration. The march went from to Memphis, Tennessee, to Jackson, Mississippi. A little after he started the march, he was shot and injured but other Civil Rights leaders continued the march.
  • Assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.

    Martin Luther King Jr. was a very well known leader in the Civil Rights Movement but was shot and assassinated by James Earl Ray while he was standing outside on a balcony. His unfair death was the start of many riots and protests.
  • Fair Housing Act

    The Fair Housing Act was made to stop discrimination in housing based on other people's race, color, religion, sex, and national origin in the sale, rental and financing of housing. But later on it added discrimination against a person's disability and family status.
