College Suicide Incidents

  • Cornell University

    Cornell University became known as the 'Suicide School," due to six student suicides during the 2009-2010 academic year. In addition to these deaths, five additional students passed away due to accidents or illnesses during the same period of time.
  • Madison Holleran

    University of Pennsylvania student Madison Holleran, a well-liked track star with a 3.5 GPA, was found dead after she jumped off a parking garage. She was the third of six University of Pennsylvania students who were confirmed to have committed suicide over a 13-month period of time.
  • Elvis Hatcher

    18-year-old University of Pennsylvania sophomore Elvis Hatcher had graduated with an Associate's Degree in Mathematics from Miami Dade College in 2012 with a 4.0 GPA. In 2014, Hatcher was the Treasurer of Pi Lambda Phi fraternity and worked in the IT center on campus. He was well-liked, and though he had not yet declared a major, was opting to take a variety of classes in several fields of study.

    During a 14-month period of time, six MIT students committed suicide, some even after visiting the campus' psychiatrist's office for help.
  • Timothy Hamlett

    On May 29, 2015, the body of Timothy Hamlett was found in the Hudson River and ruled a suicide, after it was determined that the University of Pennsylvania sophomore track and field star had jumped from the George Washington Bridge.
  • Stephen Kyle Wilshusen

    A 25-year-old engineering graduate student, Wilshusen was pronounced dead by suicide on December 31, 2015. A leader in the engineering program, Wilshusen was involved with the agriculture robotics team and was working on in-depth research, all while working toward his Ph.D.
  • Ao "Olivia" Kong

    Olivia Kong was 21 when she committed suicide this year, and was the 9th student suicide at the University of Pennsylvania within the past three years. Olivia was described as well-liked and highly successful during her time at the university, and was a junior when she passed away.
