Cold War Timeline

  • The Red Scare

    Many US citizens were lead to believe that the US government was being infiltrated by communist spies. Federal employees were analyzed and celebrities were blacklisted due to allegations. Many people lost their jobs and reputations to these allegations. Peoples lives were disrupted and the Red Scare started the continued conversation of broken civil liberties due to a fear or suspiscion.
  • Berlin Blockade and Airlift

    Berlin was divided into occupation zones. The Soviets blocked off all food and supplies to Berlin-occupied areas. UK and US planes delivered supplies over the walls. This aerial supply drop showed the support and leadership from the Allies. It also started the official split of East and West Berlin.
  • NATO

    A military alliance between 30 European and North American countries. It was a military recovery plan to go along with the Marshall Plan. It soon became a military defense against the Soviets. NATO is used a protection plan for all members and specifically during the Cold War as a military defense against the Soviet Union and their allies.
  • The Korean War

    The Korean war was between North and South Korea over the spread of communism. The US used military power to control the spread of communism. There is now a permanent divide between the Korean states and this war was the first physical war between the Soviet Union and the United States
  • Dien Bien Phu

    French troops were in the Dien Bien Phu valley and went under heavy attack by Viet Minh troops. They strongpoints making airfields inaccessible to the French troops. Eventually, the French government signed the Geneva Accords, removing France from Indochina.
  • Geneva Peace Accords

    10 documents that had an outline of stopping the war in Vietnam. it would be divided temporarily to give time for elections and government recovery. The accords were considered a failure because the documents were not binding and many countries did not sign. It lead to the end of the first Indochina war but did lead to the eventual Vietnam war.
  • The Bay of Pigs

    The Bay of Pigs was a failed attack by the US on Cuba to try and remove Fidel Castro. There was an invasion but they were outnumbered and surrendered less than 24 hours later. The hope was that the invasion would rally the citizens of Cuba to overthrow their leader but it ended up with many POWs. This attempt did lead to other planned attacks to free Havana in the future.
  • Rise of the Berlin Wall

  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    Nuclear-armed Soviet troops were seen in Cuba which is only 90 miles away from the coast of Florida. The Soviet Union eventually agreed to remove the missiles if the US did not invade Cuba. This negotiation stopped a full-blown nuclear war from happening. This event helped the relationship between Soviet Russia and the US during the Cold War.
  • Gulf of Tonkin Resolution

    Two US destroyer ships were attacked by Vietnamese forces in the Gulf of Tonkin. The US government called for more military power in Indochina as a result. These attacks were the basis and reasoning behind the US joining the Vietnam war.
  • Tet Offensive

    Tet Offensive, devised by North Vietnam was a series of planned attacks on South Vietnam. It was planned to be on many cities and outposts in South Vietnam, while some attacks did succeed, most of them were stopped by Vietnamese and US troops. These attacks were supposed to remove the US from Vietnam. It did start their removal but very slowly but most importantly it made the US lose support from its citizens.
  • My Lai Massacre

    The My Lai massacre was the murder and rape of unarmed citizens in the village of My Lai by a group of US soldiers. This massacre was covered up for years. This brutal murder lead to an even greater divide in US citizens over the Vietnam War.
  • Marshall Plan

    The US provided aid to Western Europe following WWII. The plans were to redevelop the economy and also stop the spread of communism. The economic growth was past pre-war levels but people are skeptical because European countries were already recovering before Marshall Plan.
  • Kent State University Shooting

    Four students were killed and 9 were injured as the Ohio National Gaurd shot at a group of students peacefully protesting the Vietnam War. There were immediate strikes done by the students that lead to school closures. This turning point event completely changed the public view on the war and some believe lead to the downfall of Richard Nixon
  • War Powers Act

    Enacted to limit a US president's ability to start or continue military actions. The president must notify Congress about military deploys and the time they will spend there. This act significantly helped avoid long conflicts like the Vietnam War.
  • Paris Peace Accords

    A peace treaty signed by North and South Vietnam and the US to end the Vietnam War and restore peace to the country. This treaty removed almost all US troops immediately.
  • Fall of Saigon

    The Fall of Saigon was the capture of Saigon, capital of South Vietnam. This was the event to finally end the 13 year Vietnamese War and begin a new form of government. The battles ended and US troops finally left Vietnam
  • Fall of the Berlin Wall
