Cold War Events

  • Berlin Blockade

    Berlin Blockade
This lasted from 6-24 1948 to 5-12 1949. The countries involved were France, the Soviet Union, UK, & the U.S. This was an attempt by the Soviets to force the Allied powers to abandon their posts in West Berlin. The Soviets started a blockade between the West and Berlin because the allies introduced a new deutsche mark. Because of the blockade the allies began to airlift vital supplies into the city and this continued until the Soviets lifted the blockade. I think this is the 2nd most important.
  • Korean War

    Korean War
This lasted from 6-25 1950 to 7-27 1953. The countries involved were China, the UN, North Korea, South Korea & the U.S. This war started because North Korea invaded South Korea. North Korea wanted to take over South Korea and become a communist country. The allies wanted to liberate North Korea from the communists who they were associating with. They signed an armistice, created new boundary lines, & created a demilitarized zone to solve their issues. I think this is the 3rd most important.
  • Space Race

    Space Race
This lasted from 9-2 1955 to 7-17 1975. The countries involved were the Soviet Union, & the U.S. During this time each side sought to prove the superiority of their technology, military, firepower and their political economic system. The Soviets started this race by launching the first artificial satellite into the Earth's orbit. The US then launched their own satellite. The US & the Soviets battled to become the first country on the moon and the US won. I think this is the 11th most important.
  • Vietnam War

    Vietnam War
This lasted from 11-1 1955 to 4-30 1975. The countries involved were North Vietnam, South Vietnam, & the U.S. This started because North Vietnam wanted to unify the entire country under a communist government. South Vietnam wanted a government like the U.S. The U.S. sent troops to help the South while the Soviets sent troops to help the North. The costs were too much for the U.S. so they pulled their troops and the South fell to the North by an invasion. I think this is the 4th most important.
  • Suez Canal Crisis

    Suez Canal Crisis
This lasted from 7-26 1956 to March of 1957. The countries involved were France, UK, Egypt & Israel. This started when the Egyptian president nationalized the Suez Canal. Then Israeli, French and British troops went into Egypt. The Soviet Union threatened to rain down nuclear missiles if they didn't pull their troops out. The US then threatened the countries with sanctions if they didn't leave. The conflict ended with the 3 countries troops leaving. I think this is the 8th most important.
  • U-2 incident

    U-2 incident
This lasted from 5-5 1960 to 5-17 1960. The countries involved were the Soviet Union, & the U.S. This incident happened because the Soviet Union shot down a US reconnaissance plane because they claimed it was a spy plane. The pilot said that he had a mission to fly across Russia and collect intelligence but the US denied this. Because of this incident the summit conference in Paris between the US, France, UK & the Soviet Union collapsed. I think this is the 10th most important.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    Cuban Missile Crisis
This lasted from 10-22 1962 to 11-20 1962. The countries involved were Cuba, the Soviet Union, & the U.S. This started when the US imposed a trade embargo on Cuba, so Fidel Castro( a lawyer) sought closer ties with the Soviet Union & let them build nuclear bases in Cuba. This made the US mad so they put a naval block on Cuba & demanded the Soviets remove the bases. This crisis ended when the Soviet Union agreed to remove their bases. I think this is the 1st most important.
  • Yom Kippur War

    Yom Kippur War
This lasted from 10-6 1973 to 10-26 1973. The countries involved were Egypt, Israel, & Syria. This started when Egypt & Syria attacked Israel. They attacked because Israel refused to return Arab territories they captured. The U.S. helped Israel while Russia helped Egypt & Syria. Because of the conflict the UN adopted a resolution which ordered them to stop fighting which they didn't listen to at first, but eventually listened too. I think this is the 7th most important.
  • Soviet War in Afghanistan

    Soviet War in Afghanistan
This lasted from 12-24 1979 to 2-15 1989. The countries involved were the Soviet Union, & Afghanistan. The Soviet Union was scared that the muslim population in Soviet Central Asia threatened their control so they invaded Afghanistan. Another reason they invaded was to show their support for the Afghan communist government with their conflict with anti-communist Muslim guerrillas. Most of the fighting stopped after Soviet troops began controlling cities. I think this is the 6th most important.
  • Soviets Downing Korean Air Lines Flight 007

Soviets Downing Korean Air Lines Flight 007
This occurred on 9-1 1983. The countries involved were the Soviet Union, & Korea. The Soviet Union shot down Korean air lines flight 007 after it strayed from its original path. It was going to Seoul from Alaska. The Soviets claimed the plane was gathering information for the US even though there was no evidence to support this claim. This increased the tensions between the Soviets & the US. I think this is the 9th most important.
  • "Able Archer" Military Exercise

    "Able Archer" Military Exercise
This event occurred on 11-7 1983. The countries involved were the Soviet Union, & NATO. It was a war game that realistically modeled a nuclear attack on the Soviet Union. It was conducted by NATO. Because of this military exercise the Soviet Union readied their nuclear forces and placed their air units in East Germany & Poland on alert ready to attack. Some people say this was one of the closest times the world has come to nuclear war. I think this is the 5th most important.
