Missouri Compromise
The Missouri compromise was a law addressing the tensions over slavery issues. It is the law that President James Monroe signed which states that Missouri can come into the union as a slave state, while Maine would come in as a free state. It also banned slavery from all the lands purchased from Louisiana north of the 36º 30’ parallel. This law was passed to make sure the United States was balanced. The Missouri compromise failed to resolve the slavery issues completely. -
States’ rights (Nullification Crisis)
The Nullification Crisis was a conflict between the US and south Carolina that was caused because John Calhoun opposed tariffs. The states rights was created to put trust in the government and understand the values of the United states. The states rights were also invoked to justify laws and practices that discriminate against ethnic and religious groups. They said this is help to get a strong government to respect all rights. It also helped with the protection of education. -
Texas revolution
The Texas revolution was between Mexico and Texas colonists. This revolution resulted in Texas independence and the Republic of Texas. This Revolution was because American settlers resisted Mexican laws and the restrictive Mexican policies. It included many battles as an armed conflict and political turmoil. The Texas Revolution allowed American immigrant slaveholders to continue the use of enslaved people. This war ended in April 1836. -
Mexican-American war
The Mexican - American war was a debate between the US and Mexico on if Texas ended at the Nueces River or the Rio Grande. The Nueces River was a part of mexico while the Rio Grande was a part of the US. This war resulted in the US getting more than 500,000 square miles of the Mexican territory extending westward from the Rio Grande to the the Pacific ocean. This was the first armed us conflict to be fought mostly in another country. This war ended in Febuary of 1848. -
compromise of 1850
The compromise of 1850 was made up of 5 bills to stop any disputes over slavery in new territories added into the US from the Mexican-American war. California would come in as a free state while New Mexico and Utah would decide for themselves what they want to be. This made it easier for runaway slaves to be found by their slave owners. This also permitted slavery in Washington DC and helped gain 10 Million dollars to the US. It denied enslaved people a right to trial by jury. -
Fugitive slave act
The Fugitive slave act was a law passed saying that any slave that had escaped had to be returned back to their slave owner. The northerners didn't agree with this as they wanted slaves to be free. Any person who helped the slaves escape would be punished and slaves could not testify on their own. Slaves started escaping more when the railroads were built as they were taking the trains to New England or Canada. This started a big debate between the north, south and the government. -
Bleeding Kansas
Bleeding Kansas was a violent war between pro-slavery and anti-slavery. During this war 55 people were killed and many people were injured. This war was because of the Kansas - Nebraska act. Kansas was a slave state while Nebraska was a free state. Southerners didn't like that which caused a war between pro-slavery and anti-slavery. Douglass didn't know this war was going to happen as the act was supposed to resolve issues with slavery. -
Dred Scott decision
The Dred Scott decision was a legal case with the US supreme court that said the slave Dred Scott who was staying in a free state was not entitled to his freedom. The Supreme court said African Americans were not and could never be citizens of the US. They were not going by the Missouri compromise as they said it was unconstitutional. This caused many problems as the Missouri compromise was supposed to help with the slaves that slavery was prohibited in. This pushed the country closer to war. -
Election of Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln was against the expansion of slavery while southerners were still with slavery. When he got voted for we won without any electoral votes from the southern states. Southerners saw him as a bad person and said he was trying to take away their rights which was called for secession. The southerners said this was a direct threat to their life and their job as slave owners and they wanted something to be done. The secession started a crisis. -
Secession of Southern States
Secession was a withdrawal of 11 slave states, meaning 11 states from the south were being turned into free states. This happened because the anti-slavery in the north became stronger but the debate on whether slavery should happen or be prohibited in the western territories inflamed. There was a voting on the secession but it was denied by Pres.Buchanan. Lincoln then went to war in Fort Sumter.The war caused Upper South—Virginia, North Carolina, Arkansas, and Tennessee to secede.
