Jackie Robinson was the first African-American to play in Major League Baseball in the modern era. Robinson broke the color line when he started first base for the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15 1947.

“There’s not an American in this country free until every one of us is free” Jackie Robinson was not only a famous baseball player but he broke the barrier of white people and black people in sports. Hearing this quote shows that he wants what is best for the people. He is fighting for not only himself, but to get rights for all black people.

Executive Order 9981 was an order issued on July 26 1948 by president Harry S. Truman. The order abolished any discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion or national origin in the United States Armed Forces. The Order was able to completely get rid of any discrimination happening in the United States military. This was able to show that whites and blacks are able to work together and they can accomplish more together than separate.

On May 17th 1954 the U.S Supreme Court Justice Earl Warren delivered the unanimous ruling in the landmark civil rights care Brown V. Board of education in Kansas. The ruling was that racial segregation in public schools was unconstitutional and was a violation of the 14th amendment. This was able require both white kids and black to go to school together which then caused the beginning of getting rid of discrimination.

On December 1 1955 Rosa Parks was arrested in Montgomery Alabama for refusing to give up he seat on a bus to a white man. She was sent to jail until Civil Rights leader E. D. Nixon Bailed her out of jail. This event somewhat caused the bus boycott and started the civil rights movement of earning better rights for all African Americans.

There was a Little Rock nine were a group of nine African American students that enrolled in all withe Little Rock central high school. The Little Rock 9 were stoped in the front of the school stoped by the national guard set in by the governor. Then President Eisenhower then sent in the 101st air borne division that escorted the students into the school for a regular education. This caused many other students to start going to white schools for a better education.

The table shows the incarceration rates in 1960 vs 2010. The chart shows the number of African Americans being incarcerated vs the number of whites being incarcerated. The number of African American Men being incarcerated are 4,347 vs 678 white men. This shows why there is a major problem happening in the United States and why there needs to be a change.

The freedom riders were civil rights activists who rode interstate buses into segregated southern United States in 1961. They were driving around to bring awareness to what is happening in America and showing why they should get equal rights. The freedom riders where trying to make change for all of America and they would go into areas where there is danger so it shows what they were willing to do for rights.

The freedom riders were a group of people who rode a bus across the south part of America. They were people who were civil rights activities that were protesting segregation to cause get better rights. The map shows the path that they took across the United States and shows why what they were doing was dangerous.

The freedom riders were ridding in Anniston Alabama when a mob of 50 white men armed with pipes chains and bats smashed windows, slashed tires and dented the riders bus. The police were informed hours earlier that a mob had gathered at the station the police did not arrive until after the assault had begun. The attack shows the police department did nothing to help the freedom riders and they let the people get attacked.

On June 11 1963 Black student Vivian Malone and James Hood registered for classes at the University of Alabama. The governor tried to oppose the students from being allowed in. This was unsuccessful and the students were then escorted in by the military and went to school there. Now Alabama is expecting all students and they are not allowed to discriminate on skin, race, ethnicity, or religion.

The march on Washington was the largest end gather for civil rights of its time. It was estimated 250,000 people attended the march on Washington. The march was for jobs and freedom for African Americans. The end purpose was to advocate for the civil and economics rights of African Americans so they can live fair and equal lives with white people.

On August 28 1963 during the march on Washington, Martin Luther King Jr preformed a speech. The speech was later called the I have a dream speech. The speech was to inspire all people African Americans and white people to all come together to build off each other and make a better country for all people . This was then followed by the Civil rights act and they got the rights that they wanted.

This chart shows the number of people in congress voting for the civil rights law. In the graph you can see that the law was passed and approved by 58%. This shows that the law was passed and the law was able to change all rights for African Americans in the United States. This shows that all of the things African Americans went through was worth it and it was able to get rights for all people.

On February 21 1965 in New York at the age of 39 Malcom x was assassinated. He was assassinated by members of the Nation of Islam and the shooters were William 25X, Leon Davis and Thomas Hagen. He was preparing for a speech when he got shot in the chest with a sawed off shotgun.

The march from Selma to Montgomery was when 600 civil rights activists walked to the state capital of Montgomery. They were then met by a police blockade and told to turn around which they did not do. So they were brutally attacked which was it of television and many people saw it in the north causing many people to change what side they are on.

The maps shows the route that the marchers were on to go to the Montgomery capital in Alabama. The marchers were going to get equal outing rights when they were stopped before they got to Montgomery. The importance of this was it was televised so the brutality of the situation causes changes in opinions of people.

On august 6 1965 president Johnson signs the voting rights act of 1965. This prevents people from using literacy tests as a voting requirement. This was able to change lives for many people because they are able to vote. After this act all people were able to vote. The act enforced the fifteenth amendment to the constitution and prohibited any racial discrimination in voting.

A bomb at the 16th street church in Birmingham Alabama. The bomb was sent by member of the kkk. They killed two young girls and injured many others. The people who did it only got fined for a hundred dollars. Until later they were put in prison for what they did. This shows why there was a change that needed to happen because they people were dying to the kkk and discrimination which is not ok.

On April 4 1968 martin Luther was standing on the balcony of the Lorraine motel in Memphis Tennessee. Then he was shot at 6:01 PM. He was shot by James Earl Ray. There are many theories surrounding his death, but king was planning a poor people’s campaign to occupy Washington D.C and help people in need.

President Johnson’s signs the civil rights act of 1968 also known as the fair housing act. The civil rights act and labor laws outlaws discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex and national origin. This changed the whole nation because it provided equal housing and equal opportunity’s regardless of the race, religion, sex or national origin.

This shows the amount of civil rights movement actions happening in each year. You can see in the graph the majority of actions happened in 1964-1967. You can see a major decrease in all actions in 1968 through 1976 and see the change that happened in 1964. This shows that the change was the civil rights act and it worked because it caused the civil rights movement to come to an end because they got the rights they wanted.

In the graph you can see the rate of unemployment by race. This shows the why African Americans needs things to change because of the way things are. In the graph it shows that in the 1960s the unemployment rate of African Americans is a lot more than the unemployment rate of white people, but you can see later on it starts to decrease in unemployment which shows the change of the civil rights act.
