  • Scott v. Sandford

This case decided if freed slaves counted as citizens. The court said no, under grounds of the 5th amendment.
  • Period: to

    Reconstruction Era

    Reconstruction Amendments:
-13th: Abolished slavery (except as a punishment)
-14th: Every person gone through the citizenship process should be treated as a citizen (with equal civil rights)
-15th: The right to vote can't be denied because of race or previous servitude, abolished Grandfather Clause (political rights)
-24th: The right to vote can't be denied by the government because of failure to pay any poll taxes or such.
  • Period: to

    Jim Crow Era

A time of laws based on racial segregation.
  • Plessy v. Ferguson

Established the 'seperate but equal' clause. Segregation was allowed if both things were [tangibly] equal.
  • 19th Amendment

The government can't deny the right to vote based on gender. Big women's suffrage movement (political rights, led to power in society).
  • George Stinney Case

George Stinney was accused of murder and was denied due process. He was executed at age 14.
  • Brown v. Board of Education

This case withdrew the 'seperate but equal' clause because of intangible evidence. Evidence included pyschology reports like the Doll Test and realized that segregation creates a sense of inferiority in minorities.
  • Civil Rights of 1964

Barred discrimination and segregation in education, public facilities, jobs, and housing.
  • Voting Rights Act of 1965

Prohibited racial segregation in voting. Banned polling taxes, literacy tests, and other discriminatory practices.
