  • The Sugar Act

    The Sugar Act
    In 1764, Parliament passed the Sugar. The Sugar Act lowered the tax on imported molasses.
  • The Stamp Act

    The Stamp Act
    In 1765, Parliament passed the Stamp Act. This law placed a tax on almost all printed material.
  • The Stamp Act Crisis

    During the Stamp Act crisis, Benjamin Franklin represented the colonies in London and helped secure the repeal of the the act.
  • Removal of the Stamp Act

    In March 1766, Parliament removed the Stamp Act. On the same day, it passed the Declaratory Act. This law stated that the Parliament had the right to tax and make decisions for thre British colonies "in all cases".
  • Writs of Assistance

    Writs of Assistance
    Parliament authorized "writs of assistance" These legal documents allowed customs officers to enter any location to search for smuggled goods.
  • The Tea Act

    The Tea Act
    The British East India Company faced ruin. To save the company, Parliament passed the Tea Act.
  • Coercive Acts

    The British government responding by passing Coercive Acts. These harsh laws were intended to punish the people of Massachusetts for their resistance to British law.

  • The Second Continental Congress

    The Second Continental Congress assembled for the first time.
  • Lee's resolution

    The Congress finally voted on Lee's resolution for independence.
