Ida Tarbell was born on November 5, 1857. She was born in Erie county Pennsylvania in a log cabin. Ida was the daughter of an independent oil producer.

Ida's family moved to Titusville, Pa. Her father became an oil producer and refiner. His business was located in Venango County Pa.

Ida attended Allegehny College in the fall of 1876. She was the only female out of 40 students. She majored in biology.

Ida was assigned to investigate Standard Oil. She interviewed Henry H. Rogers. In November 1902, Mcclure's ran the first of 19 installments of "History of the Standard Oil Company.

Ida Tarbell died of pneumonia in Bridgeport Hospital, Connecticut. She was 86 years old. Her home, The Ida Tarbell House, was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1993.
