This is significant because if David never called they would never have experienced a date and realized they were perfect for each other. -

After several visits from David in New York Karen moves in with David and Nic in a small house in Sausalito. Karen and Nic get close fast and have a good relationship. This is significant because now Karen is there to help raise Nic. -

Karen picks out two dogs for the family. Moondog and Bruits are now apart of the family. This is significant because throughout the book the dogs are always there to comfort the family. -

Karen is seven months pregnant with a baby boy. This is significant because this will be Karen and David’s first child together and now Nic will not be the only child. -

David shows Karen a small bag of weed that David found in Nic’s school backpack. This is significant because this is the first time as Parents that Karen and David have to deal with Nic and drugs. -

Karen and David attend multiple parent teacher conferences to make sure that Nic will no have anything to do with drugs again. They ask the teachers to separate Nic from the drugies in his school. They ground Nic for the weed incident and tell the other kids parents. This is significant because this is Nics first time braking a rule and getting grounded. -
Karen gives birth to Daisy
Karen delivers a baby girl named Marguerite but they call her Daisy. This is significant because Jasper is an older brother now and Nic has a little more responsibility because he is older and can help out. -
Karen and David get a call from the freshman dean
Karen and David get a call from the freshman dean that Nic bought weed on campus. Nic is attending a private school that has a zero tolerance for drugs. The dean gives Nic a second chance but if it happens again Nic will have to leave the school. This is significant because Karen and David have to act like strict parents and punish Nic again. -

Karen and David take Nic to a therapist about Nic getting into drugs. This is significant because unfortunately this will be the first of many therapist visits. -
Karen and David visit Nic in rehab
Karen and David visit Nic in rehab for their first family session. Nic is unhappy to be in rehab but happy to see Karen and Nic for the first time since he was admitted to rehab. This is significant because while Nic is in rehab and Karen and David are there Nic seems like he is upset now but can come out of rehab like he was never addicted to drugs. -
Karen and david recive a call from the rehab center
Karen and David receive a call from the rehab center that Nic ran away. This is significant because the nightmare for parents of an addicted child that they hoped would be fixed after is rehab time was up is just beginning. -
Karen and David struggle with Nics drug problems
Karen and David take Nic to Hampshire College and settle him down in a sober living dorm. They also begin to attend AA meetings. This is significant because Nic is back at school and Karen and David are attending meetings for their own good. -
Nic forged a check from Karen
Nic forged a check from Karen's account to have money from drugs. This is significant because Karen realizes the drugs are not just hurting Nic they are hurting the whole family from Nics actions. Karen is furious and shocked but David backs up Nic. -
Karen and David inform the kids
Karen and David tell the kids about Nics overdose and that he is in the hospital in server condition but will be ok. This is significant because this is Nics first near death experience and Karen and David struggle to tell the kids bad news about Nic. -

Karen and David put down Moondog because he is sick with cancer. This is significant because Karen is crushed because she loved moondog so much and same with the rest of the family. -

Karen calls 911 because David's head is exploding. David has cerebral hemorrhage. He has trouble remembering things and can only think about Nic. David stays in the neuron hospital for a while until he is fine to return home. This is significant because Karen could have lost her best friend. Also David realizes that his children will live with or with out him. -

Karen and David struggle with Nics addiction issues. They will give him no money for drugs and pay one more time for him to get help. This is significant because they have done everything to try and help Nic and this is Nics last chance to fix himself. -
Karen and David are lying in bed
perfect endingKaren and David are lying in bed reading. The kids are sleeping and Nic is in a rehab place in New Mexico doing well. This is significant because this is the end of the book but not the end of the story. Nic recovers well after a long hard journey and the family is right next to him by his side.
