Jane works as mule skinner, bullwhacker and a railroad worker. During this period of time she dressed and acted as a man.

Jane was on an expedition with Gen. George Crook against the Sioux. She served as a bullwhacker. One day she was swimming nude and someone found out that she is a woman so they sent her back to Rawlins.

Wild Bill Hickok and Jane had apparently met before and possibly been married. Jane accompanied Bill into town and Bill was shot and killed by Jack McCall. Jack was later hanged.

During the 1878 smallpox epidemic Jane helped to nurse smallpox patients in a log pesthouse.

Jane married E.M. Burke in California. Her daghter was born sometime that year.
Her daughter later claimed in 1941 that her real father is Wild Bill Hickok and not E.M. Burke but that claim is questionable. -
Jane went back to Deadwood sometime in 1899 and held a benefit for her daughter's education at hte Old Opera House and was successful.

Jane went to a hotel in Terry, a town near Deadwood, and died there either on August 1st or 2nd. she was buried next to Wild Bill Hickok.
