The first boxing gloves, called “mufflers,” were created in 1743 by English boxer Jack Broughton, known as the father of modern boxing. Made of soft leather and padded with wool or horsehair, they were used for training and exhibitions, not real fights. Their goal was to protect the hands and face from injuries. Unlike today’s gloves, they were light, thin, and mitten-shaped, but they marked the beginning of protective boxing gear, leading to the modern gloves made mandatory in 1867.
