The Black Panther Party is formed
Oakland community organizer Bobby Seale and ex-con turned law student Huey Newton formed the Black Panther Party for Self Defense, a revolutionary political organization, on Seale’s 30th birthday. -
Protest against the Mulford Act
Panther Chairman Seale leads a cadre of Black Panthers, shouldering arms, who march into the state Capitol to protest against the Mulford Act, also known as the "Panther Bill," designed to effectively end Black Panther police patrols. The protest was sparked by the organization's practice of conducting armed patrols in Black neighborhoods, which they termed "copwatching". -
Seale is arrested
Seale is arrested in Berkeley on charges of inciting a riot at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago a year earlier. At the famous Chicago Seven trial, Seale is bound and gagged after refusing to stop his courtroom outbursts. -

Seale’s murder conspiracy case is dismissed in New Haven, Conn., following dismissal of his case in Chicago. He is freed after 21 months in jail. -
