Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie were shot to death on June 28th, 1914, by a Bosnian Serb nationalist. They were on their way to visit the Bosnian capital of Sarajevo to inspect the imperial armed forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina, annexed by Austria-Hungary in 1908.
