    The growing militarization all nations except for Britain forced men that were the age of 18. This made the military grows very rapidly. Between 1870 and 1914 military spending by the main European powers increased by 300%. Whilhelm II made a statement in source c. Once he made this statement all the main European countries started to grow and build on to their military.

    The Dual Alliance was a treaty between Germany and Austria-hungary to protect themselves from Russia. 1879. In 1882, the Triple Alliance made an Alliance with Italy to make them not take the side of Russia. In 1894, Russia formend an alliance with France to hel protect themselves from Germany and Austria Hungary. It is called the Franco-Russian alliance.

    Growing Balkan Nationalism

    The Balkan nationalism helped contribute to the outbreak of WWII Beginning in the late 19th cenury the social unrest was a focal point to the european powers. But the Balkan states consisted of many different ethnic groups and cultures who didn’t want to be ruled by any authority other than themselves the states eventually started a revolution. This is to be belived that it was a spark to WWII.

Both sides thought the war would be over before Christmas but it wasn't because they both used the same strategy by trying to wear eachother down.

    Archduke Franz Ferdinand shot dead by student. This was the headline of newspapers in 1914 on june 28. His wife the duchess of Hohenburg was killed in the same assassination. During the course of the day two other attempts of killing Ferdinand. In a part of town a serb student fired a revolver at the car killing both the archduke and the duchess.

    The unrestricted submarine warfare was announced by germany on january 9th 1917. This was another major reason why the u.s. joined the war. The reason for this move was that the germans were pretty much loseing the war and the knew that their u-boats were very effective so they made this in attempt to try and gain ground on the war. But at the battle of Jutland it showed that the german navy was not strong enough to defeat the royal navy.

    The zimmerman telegram was created in january of 1917. This was made to try and join the u.s. and the german cause. They did this by offering the u.s. territory in mexico in return for joining the german cause. This message helped draw the united states into the war. Thus changing the course of history. On april 6 1917 the united states congress formally declared war on germany and its allies.

    German U-boats

    A u-boat is a german submarine that was largely used in both wwI and WWII. In 1917 the decision to use u-boats to attack merchiant ships was made. This was how the u.s. got envolved in the war. That year 430 allied and neutral ships totaling 825,000 tons were sunk. Due too u-boats. It seemed as the german u-boat forces were unstoppable. But the introduction of convoys, numerous u.s. destroyers and the large output of american shipyards turned everything for the better. Well for us.

    The Bolshevikes were a revolutionary party, the lived off the ideas of karl marx. The Bolsheviks were formed and led by the vladimir Ilyich Ulianov. Known simply as lenin.     The Great Depression happened because of WWI and destroyed Britians empire. They could no longer afford to build and defend themselves. The US loaned them money which they paid back immeadiatly. After 11 years, the European economy was still not fixed from WWI. Europe was basically bailed out by US because they loaned enough money to Europe. In 1929, The Depression hit the US and the Stock Market crashed. For years after, people spending and investments dropped and people were unemployed.

    Was used to try to stop all wars after WWI. It was designed to try to make the world a bunch of independent nation states they couldn't be interfered with. The league of Nations worked for a decade after WWI. Once bigger powerful countries questioned the League of Nations, it made it impossible for them to stay together.

    the treaty of versailles was signed on june 28 1919 at the end of WWII. After months of arguments and revision it finnaly satisfyed the “big 3” David Lloyd George of Britain, Clemenceau of France, and Woodrow Wilson. The german reaction was not very good they were actually not going to sign the treaty. The allies gave them two choices 1. Either sign the treaty or 2. Have all the allies invade the country of germany. You can guess what they did.

    The first Fascism movement was in Italy in 1922 to gain power for the Mussolini's Blackshirts. Fascism is a government led by a dictator having absolute power Germany had it with Hitler, for Nazism. Japan used Fascism for Hirohito. WWII started because of Fascism in Germany under Adolf Hitler and his racism against Jews.

    Stalin was in control in 1929. While his time as leader he tried to gain fame for the three reasons, the five year plan, colectivisation, and the purges. He became a follower of Marxism. He created the first five year plan which was from 1928 to 1932 he then made 2 more. Five year plans the spanded fom 1933 to 1941.

    The war started with a revolt of the Republican Spanish Party. It was a bloody war between the Nationalists vs the Republicans. The Nationalists had Italy and Nazi Germany, while the Repulicans had US and most of Europe. The war was over polarization and politics that had developed ove years and years. On April 1, 1939, the Nationalist leader Franco won the war after the Republic collapsed. Franco the Dictated them.

    Hitler wanted all german speaking countries to be under Nazi rule. The Treaty of Versailles said that Germany and Austria couldn't unite but Hitler wanted to take over Austria. He also wanted Czechoslovakia because they boardered Austria. The ruler of Austria, Schuschnigg, said that if his people wanted to join Germany, they could. This made Hitler furious and he threatened to ordered his people to Invade. Schuschnigg conceded. Hitler attacked and took over Austria two days later.

    The Nazi army, called the "Wehrmacht", was not fully prepared and their government was still signed into the peace of the countries. Britian and France heard some of the plans to invade Poland, the German Army was ready and prepared for a counter attack. Hitler was confident this would be a easy invasion because of the Polish's army strategy and the British and French Prime Ministers were considered weak by him. 2 hours after the invasion, France and Britian declared war on Germany.

    In the spring of 1940 germany asserted itself as a conqueror of nations, the successfully invaded and occupied 6 countries in fewer than 100 days. On april 9, 1940 Germany invaded Denmark, which hit its peak in just 6 hours. At the same time Nazi ships and troops were in Norwegian waters. Attacking ships, landing troops and starting a conflict that lasted for two months.

    The Evacuation of Dunkirk

    Over 300,000 troops were evacuated during May and June 1940 from Dunkirk. The Germans were invading and would have killed hundreds of thousands of troups if it wasn't for this miracle. They were rescued by the harbour and beaches nearby. The French, Belgium, and British had underestimated the power of the Nazi army.

    The battle of britian was a struggle between the Greman Luftwaffe, and the Royal British Air Force. His went on from july to October 1940. The battle was the first major campaign in history to be fought entirely in the air. It was a result of a German plan to win air superiority over south Britian and England channel. They did this by destroying the British air force and industry. Hitler saw victory in this battle as a prelude to the invasion of Britian.

    Japan suprisingly attacked a American naval base in Hawaii and declared war against Britian and the United States. After this, the current President of the US, Franklin Roosevelt, is ready for war againast Japan. It happened at 0755 local time when the first wave of 50 to 150 planes hit the base causing severe fires and harsh damage on the coast. The second wave hit not long after. The US fought back and held them off. Japan joined Germany and Italy on the Axis alliance.gg

    37 Douglas Dauntless bombers of the USS Enterprise attacked 2 Japanese aircraft carriers. In only a few minutes, they both were ablaze. Many died from the fuel lines explosions. Japan got revenge by attacking British Warships in the Indean Ocean.

    Battle of Guadalcanal

    On July 6th, 1942, Japanese troops landed on Guadalcanal and began making an airfield there. On August 7th, 6,000 US marines landed there and seized the airfield. By October, there were over 36,000 Japanese troops there but it wasn't enough to take back over the airfield. Japan lost 24,000 soldiers in the Battle of Guadalcanal while US lost 1,600.

    The Battle of Stalingrad

    From july 17, 1942 to febuary 2, 1943 it was a successful Soviet Defense of the city of Stalingrad. The Russians consider it to be the greatest battle of their Great Patriotic War. Many historians consider it to be the greatest battle in the entire war. It was planned to stop the German advance into the Soviet Union and marked the turning of the war in favour of the Allies.

    On june 6, 1944 a date that will be forever known as D-day, a mighty armada crossed a narrow strip of sea from England to Normandy, France and cracked the Nazi grip on Western Europe. May 14th was the set time for the invasion but as bad weather set in it was dangerous for landing conditions. After much debate Eisenhower and his subordinates decided on a 24 hour delay. Eventually on june 5th Eisenhower assured by the chief meteorologist of a break in weather. so that day they set out to normandy

    Matrch 8th, 1945 was the end to Hitler's war. It was 6 years of suffering and misery. It was celebrated by partying, quiet reflection, or nothing at all. Nothing was ever the same again. The Germans surrendered in Italy on May 2nd. The final document to end the was signed at General Dwight Eisenhower's headquarters in Reims on May 7th. The americans made the V-E Day happen on MAy 8th, instead of May 7th.

    American bombers dropped 2,000 tons of incendiaries on Tokyo, Japan. It destroyed the Japanese capital and killed over 100,000 civilians. The US used this to break the Japanese morale and force them to surrender. It was the first major bombing against Japan.

    The Bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
    On August 6th, 1945 during wwII an American B-29 bomber dropped the world’s first deployed atomic bomb over the Japanese city of Hiroshima. The explosion wiped out 90 percent of the city and killed 80,000 people immediately. Later tens of thousands would later die of radiation exposure. Three days later a second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, killing 40,000. Later japan’s Emperor announced their surrender on august 15th.
