Nazi Germany and its allies fought the Soviet Union for control of the city of Stalingrad (now called Volgograd) in the Soviet Union. It is the single largest and bloodiest battle in the history of warfare. -
Battle of Berlin (Air)
The British bombing campaign on Berlin. Other German cities were bombed as well. "A failure for the Royal Air Force" as it was not the knockout blow that Harris had predicted. The RAF lost 1,047 bombers, with another 1,682 damaged, and over 7,000 aircrew.
