The battle took early place in the Revolutionary War during the siege of Boston. Colonial militia built fortifications on Breed's Hill, and British troops attacked. Although the colonists ran out of ammunition and lost the hill, they inflicted heavy casualties on the British. It proved that colonial forces could stand up to the professional British army, boosting American confidence even though it was technically a loss.
