Bas van Fraassen is born in April of 1941, in Goes, Netherlands. He lived in Holland until he was 15, before moving to Canada with his family.

Bas van Fraassen has written many books, including The Scientific Image in 1980, Laws and Symmetry in 1989, and The Empirical Stance in 2002. Each book touches on an aspect of philosophical science that van Fraassen specializes in.

van Fraassen taught at multiple universities, including Yale and University of Toronto before settling down in Princeton University in 1982, before retiring and working with San Francisco State University in 2008

van Fraassen won the Lakatos award for his work in philosophical sciences in 1986, but more recently he received the Hempel Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2012, also being the first recipient.
