When he arrived there, the Aztec rulers Moteczuma thought that Cortes was their God from before who promised he would come back and rule the Aztecs. Moteczuma answered Cortes with peace, but Cortes still wanted to conquer Tenochtitlan so he killed all the Aztecs.
