Atoms and Junk

    Aristotle

    Aristotle
Aristotle did not believe in the atom and convinced others to not follow Democritus. So because of that people dismissed the atom for almost two thousand years.
    Note: this is 460 B.C.

    Democritus

    Democritus
460 B.C. Democritus believed that all of matter, including all of space and time, was created with small things called atoms. He created the idea of the atom and it wasn't until a much later date that it was accepted.
    Note:This happened in 460 B.C.
  • Dalton

    Dalton
Agreed with Democritus that atoms existed, however he thought that they were indivisble and indistructable, which they aren't. This is important because he reintroduced the idea of atoms and proved it.
  • J.J. Thompson

    J.J. Thompson
He discovered electron using a cathod-ray tube. The electron is an important part of the history and make up of the atom adn because of Mr. Thomson we know about it.
  • Ernest Rutherford

    Ernest Rutherford
Used the gold foil experiment to discover the modern day version of the atom. He also discovered that all negative electrons circle the nucleas. Because of this we now have a better understanding of how an atom looks and how it is configured.
  • Robert Millikan

    Robert Millikan
Used an oil drop expirement to determine the charge of a single electron. His discovery helps tell us how the electron works and moves.
  • Neils Bohr

    Neils Bohr
Showed that outer orbits in an atom could hold more electrons than inner orbits.
  • Werner Heisenberg

    Werner Heisenberg
Thought of the Uncertainty Princilpal which states that no one can ever know the exact location and energy of an electron simultaniously. Becasue of this we now have a better idea of how quickly electrons are.
  • Cloud Model

    Cloud Model
An austrian man named Erwin Schrodinger invented it and it gives us a good understanding of the way an atom looks.
  • James Chadwick

    James Chadwick
James Chadwick discovered the neutron and now we know that there are neutrons and it gives us an even bigger peek into the atom.
