  • 415 BCE

    Democritus

    Democritus
Came up with the idea that matter was composed of empty space through which atoms move. Atoms are invisible, indestructible and solid. Different atoms have different sizes and shapes. Difference in matter due to atoms. Change in matter is because the change of an atom.

    Leaning tower of pisa

    Leaning tower of pisa
The construction of the leaning tower of pisa was stopped for 100 years because the base was uneven. So the leaning tower of pisa has never been straight and wasn't intended to be leaning.
  • Antonie Lavosier

    Antonie Lavosier
Named oxygen and was the person responsible for starting the law of the conservation of mass - one of the biggest things in chemistry.
  • Joseph Proust

    Joseph Proust
He came up with the law of constant composition which says that all compounds or elements are made up of the same things in the same ratio. (Link Text)(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2nAYSy8N_x0)
  • John Dalton

    John Dalton
Revised Democritus's ideas to - All matter is composed of extremely small particles called atoms, all atoms of a given element are identical, having the same size, mass, and chemical property, atoms are different depending on element, atoms cannot be created, divided, or destroyed. Different atoms combine in whole number ratios to make compounds. Chemical reaction - when atoms are separated, combined or rearranged.
  • Amadeo Avagadro

    Amadeo Avagadro
Came up with the Avogrado's hypothesis which states that gases with the same amount of volume, pressure, and temperature, then it would have the same number of molecules ore atoms. The solved the problem of atomic weight.
  • Fire and the Fire Hydrant

    Fire and the Fire Hydrant
The building that held the patent for the fire hydrant burnt down, to this day no one really knows for sure who invented it/holds the patent for it.
  • An ironic death

    An ironic death
Union General John Sedgwick was killed seconds after coming out of the trenches, and saying to his troops "Confederate soldiers couldn't hit an elephant at this distance. "
  • William Crookes

    William Crookes
(Link text) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Pv-91GJHcg) Discovered the cathode ray. He did this by sending electrical currents through gas in a sealed tube. At first they believed that this particles were negatively charged, but later were called electrons.
  • Anglo-Zanzibar War

    Anglo-Zanzibar War
The shortest war in history was fought. It lasted only 38 minutes. It will be hard to beat that record.
  • Henri Becquerel

    Henri Becquerel
(Link text)(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zkfu3K5RjMI) He discovered that certain elements have radioactivity to some degree. He did this after the discovery of the x-ray and wanted to see if elements emitted radioactivity. Found out somewhat by accident when he left uranium in his drawer.
  • J.J. Thomson

    J.J. Thomson
Officially discovered the electron using Cathode Ray tubes. Was able to show that the cathode tubes were negatively charged. Made a new model of the atom that he described as pudding with raisins. Good, but didn't show positive charge in the atom as particles.
  • Madame Curie

    Madame Curie
She researched the radioactivity of the different elements and compounds. She found that the amount of radiation depended on the amount element proving that radiation comes from the atom itself. She also found the elements radium and polonium.
  • Max Planck

    Max Planck
He found out that matter can only gain or lose energy in small increments called quanta. He also came up with Planck's constant.
  • Albert Einstein

    Albert Einstein
Proposed that electromagnetic radiation has both wavelike and particle like characteristics. He discovered what photons were using this thinking. Also credited with the equation E=mc^2.
  • Robert Millikan

    Robert Millikan
Found out what the charge of the electron was. He was so close that it is within %1 of the current accepted value. Using this he was even able to calculate the mass of a single electron.
  • Ernest Rutherford

    Ernest Rutherford
Was a student of Thomson and proved his model of the atom wrong. He discovered the atom nucleus. Used experiments where he would send alpha atoms at an element and would record particles not completely going through. Atom made up of a positively charged (protons) nucleus and electrons surround it.
  • Baby Charity

    Baby Charity
A paris orphanage held a raffle to raise money and the prize was a live baby.
  • Henry Moseley

    Henry Moseley
Found out that each element contains a unique positive charge in their nuclei. This was the number of protons and was then called the atomic number. This number was added to the periodic table. This then created the periodic law and changed the periodic table to an order that would work.
  • Niels Bohr

    Niels Bohr
Came up with a new model for the atom that involved the electrons circling the nucleus. This is called the planetary model, because of the similar way the solar system orbits. He found out that the energy correlated with the orbit.
  • Shortest Presidency

    Shortest Presidency
Pedro José Domingo de la Calzada Manuel María Lascuráin Paredes became the shortest reigning president serving for less than an hour. He did the in the interim before he appointed another person as president.
  • Louis deBroglie

    Louis deBroglie
Revealed that their were wavelengths found in the electrons and different parts of the atom. Using this type of thinking he was able to create the de Broglie equation.
  • Erwin Schrodinger

    Erwin Schrodinger
Came up with yet another atom model. This one was called the quantum mechanical model. This model predicts where groupings of electrons would be and puts them into an electron cloud.
  • Werner Heisenberg

    Werner Heisenberg
(Link text) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7vc-Uvp3vwg) He said that their was no way to observe matter without in some small way changing that object. This is called the Uncertainty principle.

    The Emu Wars
(Link Text)(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-CwCoaQ2v2A) The Emu wars were going on it Australia. Emus were disturbing Australian farm land and crops. The problem escalated to the point where the nuisance wildlife military operation had to come in to help. After a couple of failed attempts they sent a small army with guns and they still returned with a loss. They were only able to kill a couple of the emus.
