Although Scott and Amundsen never met, they were both aware of each other and their common goal of being the first to arrive at the South Pole. Amundsen, with four assistants and fifty-two Eskimo dogs, began his trek across the ice on Oct.r 19, 1911. Scott, with fifteen men, motorized sleds, ponies, and dogs, began his walk nearly two weeks later on Nov. 1, 1911. Amundsen arrived at the South Pole on Dec. 14, 1911, a note for Scott at the pole. Scott's group reached the pole on Jan. 17, 1912.
