After returning to Spain, Vespucci asked the king for resources to lead a expedition to the Indian Ocean when he was denied he went to Portugal.

After a halt at the Cape Verde Islands, the expedition traveled southwestward and reached the coast of Brazil toward Cape St. Augustine.
