In March of 1765 the British Government passed the Stamp Act in the Thirteen Colonies, which caused a group of patriot businessmen from Boston and Massachusetts form a political organization called the Loyal Nine. The loyal Nine was made to organize protests against the taxes and was quickly made widespread surpassing its original 9 members and in return it became more radical.
The name of the organization is assumed to come from Irish-born MP Isaac Barré who gave an anti-taxation speech. -
On august 14 of 1765 The loyal nine burned down effigies of Stamp Act commissioner Andrew Oliver, and after that when he still didn't resign the loyal nine burned down his office building and after he resigned, they decided to almost destroy the house of his close associate Lieutenant Governor Thomas Hutchinson. It is believed they had done this to excite the lower classes to get them to rebel against the authorities. Their actions made several stamp distributors resign in fear.

The organization spread across various colonies under different names, but the name "The Sons of Liberty" was first used in November by New York and Connecticut. and by November 6th a committee was made in New York to correspond with other colonies and by November 11th a meeting in Connecticut laid out organizational plans. in December an alliance was formed between groups in New York and Connecticut. by march the sons of liberty had an emergence in New Jersey, Maryland and Virginia.

celebrating the repeal of the stamp act the sons of liberty decided to erect the pillar of liberty. after news hit of the repeal a stone cutter worked on a monument memorializing the appeal taking him 12 days of work through the spring and summer to create the base. and on July 22nd, 1766, the sons of liberty placed the base of the pillar of liberty on the church green at the corner high court streets. the base made of granite from Battelle's farm with an inscription written by Ames

The Sons of liberty popularized the use of tar and feathering to punish government officials starting in 1767 also using this method of punishment against the British loyalists during the American revolution.

The sons of liberty executed the famous Boston tea party of 1773 to protest the British Tea act, and they did this by boarding the Dartmouth (the British's ship) disguised as native Americans and proceeded to overthrow 342 chests into the Boston Harbour. Their actions were seen as an act of rebellion against the British taxation and colonial governance, which escalated tensions leading to the American Revolutionary War.
