    Senator George Norris proposes the "Lame Duck" Amendment

    On December 5th, 1922 Senator George Norris of Nebraska proposed to have an amendment also know as the "lame duck" amendment, that sets a date to tell when the president has to be out of the white house. This date was moved from March 4 to January 20.

    The House of Representatives approves the amendment by a vote of 336 to 56
  • Officially Proposed

    Congress officially proposes the 20th Amendment to the states for ratification
  • First State to Ratify

    Virginia becomes the first state to ratify the amendment. Many states follow Virginia in the ratification process because this will benefit all of the states of this passes.
  • Almost to Three-Fourths

    Five states made of Arizona, Montana, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Oregon ratify the amendment which brings the total number of ratifications close to three-fourths
  • Final State to Ratify

    Missouri becomes the 36th state to ratify the amendment which meets the requirement for it to become part of the constitution.
  • Certified the 20th amendment

    Secretary of State Henry Stimson certifies the ratification and the twentieth amendment becomes officially apart of the law.

    Franklin D. Roosevelt is the last president to be inaugurated on March 4th 1933 and then in 1937 becomes the first president to be inaugurated on January 20th.
