  • D-Day The Invasion of Normandy

    700 Warships, 25,00 landing craft, more than 150,000 allied troops, and 2700 support ships landed on th beaches Omaha, Utah, Gold, and sword invading France. It was the start of the liberation of Northern Europe.

    The French Resistance staged an uprising on German occupiers which led to a truce. Allied forces later came and finallized the liberation of France

    Allied Offensive in the Sarr Valley

    General Patton was charged with assaulting the west wall between Germany and France. November 8th his troops pushed through the Moselle River and captured the city of Metz. The allied troops then crossed the Saar Valley and met heavy resistance at the West Wall. The allies eventaully oushed through and for the first time they had troops on German soil.

    The Battle of the Bulge

    The Germans launched an offensive in mid-December and managed to penetrate deep into allied forces creating a bulge in the middle of their lines. Eisenhower called a halt on the troops marching to Rhine to help deal with the assault. The German forces who were then the ones in danger of being cut off retreated and the allies gained back all the land they had lost from the German offensive.

    The Battle of Berlin

    The Russians pushed toward Germany taking land they had conquered in 1941 and 1942. The Russians, in mid-April, then started a drive toward the German capital, Berlin. They penetrated the city limits by the 21st. The battle continued in the city until May 2nd after Hitler had commited suicide the city's millitary commander finally surrendered. More than 300,000 people were injured/killed in the battle and 450,000 German soldiers were captured by Russian forces at the end of the battle.

    Closing of the Ruhr Pocket

    Allied forces swarmed across the Rhine and the Germans fell back to the Ruhr Valley. The Allies then encircled the German army trapping them. The German commmander realising his situation commited suicide. The 325,000 soldiers then surrendered to Allied forces decimating the German army.
