It shows Ove's childhood and relationship with his father who taught him about honesty and fixing things when he was younger. It show's how Ove's honesty, responsibility, and hard work was formed.

Ove helps out Parvaneh and Patrick with fixing their radiator and it shows Ove's skills and kindness under his normal grumpy surface. It also shows how his manner connects him to others even if he complains about doing it.

Ove inspects the neighborhood, and enforces rules that are posted around the area. Including no cars in residential area. Ove's obsession with following the rules is introduced to the reader showing a part of who he is.

Ove tries to hang himself, but he is interrupted by his new foreign neighbors. Parvaneh and Patrick. These two characters are now introduced and will play a significant role in his life slowly giving him purpose again.

Ove was giving Parvaneh a Driving Lesson as she didn't know how. Through his roughness Ove wants her to succeed. Ove provides help to his neighbors who are slowly but surely growing on him, and becoming a bigger part of his lives.

Ove is teaching his neighbors son Jimmy how to back up a trailer. Ove may be impatient, and blunt but he teaches it well. Ove's sharp tongue and hidden kindness are shown, and he can't stop himself when he sees someone needs help.

It's when Ove saved a Man who fell into the train tracks, and Ove showed his bravery and kindness in this chapter by risking himself to save another person. It also shows that under his hard, grumpy persona he is a kind man.

Ove dies peacefully, after he regained purpose in his life through his neighbors, Parvaneh's family, and the community. Ove's journey from loneliness and grief to finally finding something to look forward to again helped him.

Ove becomes a true protector showing loyalty to Rune, and also that he lives by fairness and justice. Ove became a compassionate person who many cared about, and Ove inspires his neighbors to stand together to show the power of community.
