1797

many people hope that Washington will run for a third term, but he declines. He said that presidents should not run for more than two terms because it could cause in a king like power.

Early versions

1803

Congress considered early versions of the term limit. This came up because it was already being followed by past Presidents, but they wanted to make it official.

Senate approved

1824

Senate approved the the first parts of the term limits. Then was later rejected by the house. This lead for it to be forgotten about.

Franklin D Roosevelt elected for 3rd term

1940

FDR is elected for a 3rd term. This was a big shock to many as former presidents have not gone over 2 terms.

Franklin D Roosevelt elected for 4th term

1944

FDR Gets elected for a 4th term. This shocks even more people because how far it has gone so far.

Franklin D Roosevelt dies

Apr 12, 1945

FDR dies while in office, This causes a spark of talk for the term limits.

Term limit gets past congress

1947

The term limit was passed from congress with a vote of 285-121 meeting the 2/3rds vote expectation

The term limit get ratified

1951

The term limit gets the vote from the 36th state of Minnesota. It then is ratified and becomes the 22nd amendment.

Eisenhower becomes the first president restricted.

1960

Dwight D. Eisenhower is very popular after his first two terms. He believes that he could've been elected for a third with out this amendment.

Repeal of 22nd Amendment is Proposed

1986

The repeal of the 22nd amendment was proposed during Bill Clinton's 2nd term. Several democrats were in favor of this, but it was never acted upon by congress.
